From an ugly duckling to an almost graceful swan - that's the transformation of Ulsoor Lake. All that money - how much was it? About 450 lacs? - seems to be well spent! If it looks this neat in summer, I can imagine the lake with the tank full up, during the monsoon!
Real estate development is big business in Bangalore. Every time I'm there, some old building has vanished and another, invariably with chrome and glass, has taken its place! This is in Kamaraj Road, adjoining Commercial street.

Chrome and glass allright, with colourful - should I say flowerful - facade. No doubt, its meant to attract the fairer sex! Eva is the building name or is it the name of the designer store? No idea, for now.
This showroom, on 100 ft Road, Indiranagar, once housed a STD booth, a beauty parlour and a shop frying/selling potato chips. I used to make calls from there..it was just another faceless single storied building! In its place, seemingly overnight, is this Reebok showroom!!!! Its difficult even for me, without sputtering, to comprehend these sudden and awesome changes in the landscape that was Bangalore. I can only imagine for old-timers!

Amidst all these changes are old-world buildings that seem totally incongruous! For God's sake and mine, I hope these are allowed to stay. L & G, the Mythic soceity building, on Nruputhunga Road.
Nope, I did not have the time to have lunch here but what a cute name for me, er, the restaurant??
I'm sure this is unintended but the photo arrangement makes it almost appear as if Kennedy is garlanded by shoes and leather paraphernalia. However, the fact is that in many shops in old Bangalore, there are 3 photos that are guaranteed present - Gandhiji, Nehru and Kennedy! Somebody tell me why he's so popular with old timers. Perhaps his sundry romances captured the feverish imagination of our guys back then?

A nice thing on the part of Bangalore City Corporation to help redesign and get private sponsorship -
Cobbler Kiosks!

2 things that I could eat any/every day and in any quantity - corn ( boiled or charcoal-roasted ) and groundnuts. I freaked at this shop in Food World complex, MG Road, that sells corn - boiled, of course - in many different combinations using butter, chaat masala, coriander, chilli powder, other pulses etc. God, I could travel to Bangalore again to have just corn! LOL!

Ok, drum roll for the Superstar! Here's a pic of a newspaper report in Kannada about Superstar. Its says " Rajni style-a bere " meaning "Rajni has his own unique style! " Hmmmph, as if his fans don't know!

Here's a pic of the posters splashed at the entrance to Naga Theatre where Chandramukhi is running, houseful, since its opening. The collage features a pic of the Superstar from each of his earlier movies. Isn't this nice? I mean, how did they manage to get it all? High-tech are Superstar's fans in Bangalore!

if there is one thing i realise after so many years in bangalore...it is this: bangalore is not dying. bangalore is dead

This is superb. My friend from Bangalore now in Pune misses Bangalore. I can now understand why he does so. Seems a beautiful place. I am sure he too will check this one out and will like it. Keep giving us pictures of Bangalore if possible-----for people who love the city but are not in there!

 | | | Ravi May 9, 2005 05:30 PM PDT
Wow, akka. Never knew this bit about the corn being available here...so much for being ignorant! But I will check it out one of these days...thank you! :)
 | | | Ravi May 9, 2005 05:29 PM PDT
Curses thambi...how's the exams going? You HAVEN"T seen the film yet....how could you? :(
 | | | ramya May 9, 2005 02:21 PM PDT
ravi thambi,
not to belittle bangalore corn, but the same stuff is sold at two/three outlets in chennai too...two in spencer plaza (one close to the food plaza and the other next to the ranch store.) and one in satyam theatre...
i lurrrrve it!
o, thanks for the advice. i'm a compulsive helmet-wearer myself! :)

Wowie!! That's my part of town! Can't wait to see it in the summer hols!

Thanks, Hari. Yeah, Bangalore is changing by the day, some for the good, some not so! Anyway, its overwhelmingly cosmopolitan feel is what makes it so different from Chennai. Maybe this is for the good; for some reasons, I prefer Chennai, thank you very much! But who knows, let the Metro come up and well in Bangalore, I might go back to the city of my birth! Thats enough of an incentive, escaping all that pollution and noise. Besides, one of the metro corridors proposed starts from around my place i.e off Indiranagar! Wowwwweeeee,eh? :)
 | | | Ravi May 8, 2005 11:09 PM PDT
Hi Senthil. But I've pre-programmed the vertical photo to come out horizontal in my digital camera. Guess I need to change that setting. Long time no here. How's life? :)
 | | | Ravi May 8, 2005 11:09 PM PDT
Hi Narayanan! Yup, the corporators couldn't ignore the force and clout behind 'Save Ulsoor Lake' community groups, other citizens groups, well-wishers, important fuddy-duddies, city fathers et al in restoring. I think the exercise paid off. Today from a stagnant lake, its turning into a beauty spot slowly! I thought I saw space reserved for joggers around the periphery of the lake too! Very nice, i tell you! :)
 | | | Ravi May 8, 2005 11:08 PM PDT
Do that, DV. If you need any help there let me know! :)
 | | | Ravi May 8, 2005 11:08 PM PDT
Dear Anand..i trust you looked up 'musical instruments' in the Bangalore Yellow pages? If you had, you couldhave zeroed in on the place. In Brigade Road is a place called Reynolds...they are more western instrument oriented but the owner wuld surely have helped get you the tablas...I'm sure. 100%!! Bangaloreans are nice people. But then so is everybody! ;)
 | | | Ravi May 8, 2005 11:08 PM PDT
Hi Lavannya: Re: Plastic & culture...i agree with you. Lets bring back nature & greenery in Bangalore, shall we? Re: Saapat Raman..i thought so too. Something didn't feel right; hence, did not step in! :)
 | | | Ravi May 8, 2005 11:07 PM PDT
Thanks, Robbie. Say, you're not Robbie Williams, are you? ;)
 | | | Hari May 8, 2005 09:29 AM PDT
Hi Ravi,
A fabulous work again. I just love that city and the pace of the changes is just mind boggling.
And hey, that corn looks very inviting, but what exactly was the size of that bowl. You know we get the same at Spencer Plaza here, called "American Corns" or something like that.
Keep going buddy, love each of them.
 | | | senthil May 8, 2005 07:17 AM PDT
Nice pictures ravi.small tip, when you are shooting a building or an object in which height is a priority shoot it vertically.
 | | | Narayanan May 8, 2005 04:01 AM PDT
Fantastic, photographs, thank you.!
I like the Sappat Raman restaurant.! Interesting name.!!
Commercial Street used to be my favorite shopping spot whenever I visited Bangalore.
Nice to see the beautification efforts of Ulsoor Lake.!
 | | | DV May 7, 2005 10:43 AM PDT
Cool pic Ravi. Itz almost 4 years since i went to b'lore. Planning for one soon. Been missing so many things there! And then your pics make me want to go there right away!! Will do.
 | | | Anand May 7, 2005 03:57 AM PDT
Cool pictures. Last year I came to Bangalore to visit my friend's parents and we went in search of buying a pair of tabla and couldnt find a single store selling the ones that I wanted. Was a bit disappointed. Same thing with Madras, couldnt really find one good store that had the 6" tabla that I wanted.
And certainly, MG Road, Brigade Road and Commercial street has changed a lot. We usually come to Bangalore during our college tours and last year when I was there, I saw a lot of new changes...new buildings, new bridges and lot more hep crowd :-)
 | | | lavannya May 7, 2005 12:37 AM PDT
dont eat at Saapat Raman if you dont want to be dissappointed...
The names really cute..the place looks awful and food very very very below standard Tamilian Cuisine.
 | | | lavannya May 7, 2005 12:36 AM PDT
Wow!! that's a lot of pics!
I hate those rubber/plastic/arctificial trees...
they are somehow a reflection of how our culture and people are today...
 | | | Robbie May 6, 2005 08:35 PM PDT
Hi.. First time here.. nice to know ur in bangalore... and you ppl had a meet too ... ahhww! wish I came here earlier.....anyways..... liked the naga photo...

 | | | Ravi May 6, 2005 01:17 PM PDT
Thanks, Chikuado...long time no see here! Yes, people like me tend to get worked up about cities...own or adopted! Unfortunately, there are many citizens who just dont care too.....
 | | | Ravi May 6, 2005 11:18 AM PDT
You are right, Maran re: Indian features. However, these might make them more temple-ish, i think! What say you? Simple, clean lines are welcome anyday! LOL regarding corn in moderation!
 | | | Ravi May 6, 2005 11:13 AM PDT
Krishna....am reaching over to you via email! :)
 | | | Ravi May 6, 2005 11:12 AM PDT
Thanks, Srikar! L.Shruthi is close by..I will contact them, this weekend! Thanks, pal! :)

Prabz...things are improving, i dare say, in all parts of Bangalore. For that matter, in India. However, its the slow pace that sucks...our neighbours in China have caught up and gone far ahead.....just WHEN will we catch up? :(
 | | | Ravi May 6, 2005 11:09 AM PDT
LOL @ karthik! Boy, you sure are possessive of V. B. I'm sure it must be in Gandhi Bazaar then...me haven't been there yet..next time, for sure! :)
 | | | Ravi May 6, 2005 11:08 AM PDT
Dheepak - next time a visit to Koramangala, BTM, JayaNagar, for sure. Not to mention, Gandhi Bazaar!

Yay, pics at last! :) The fountain pic is lovely! The flowery decoration is totally weird... not in tune with the building. I've gotta say that I like the old-fashioned buildings better than all-class facades. *sigh*
 | | | chikuado May 5, 2005 02:30 PM PDT
lovely pix.. ulsoor lake loox awesome.. the one thing i love about bangalore - ppl are obsessed with the city!
the flowery building loox weird - but we cud all do with a change ;-)
saapatraman is a cute name indeed!!
keep the pix coming! | |
 | | | Maran May 5, 2005 11:18 AM PDT
Cool photos man! I hope ppl incorporate Indian features in the designs(2nd pic did). I see Beijing city in TV have office building shaped like pagodas. Why can Indians do something like that. BTW I like corn too in moderate quantities :-)

Wish the architects had better creativity - tired of all the glass structures mushrooming in Bangalore.
Yet to see the charm of old world Bangalore - sleepy, green, garden city. Koramangala, BTM, JayaNagar are recent additions which doesnt have the bangalore signature.
Still waiting for the pics.....

Hi Savitha. While at Blr, the office work snowballed into 2 days. Otherwise, my intention was to go to Vidhyarthi Bhawan over in Malleshwaram, right?, and have a dozen masala dosas! This just couldn't happen. Woe is me. Do drop in again to see my pics coming up!!!
 | | | Savitha May 4, 2005 05:37 PM PDT
Hey man, nice post. btw, didn't you visit malleswaram or gandhi bazaar? it is a pot-pourri of old world charm and the new age swankiness...
